ive learned a couple big things over the past couple years. i summed up the first big lesson about the importance of deep relationships around May i think.
the second big lesson ive learned is very different but is just as powerful. ive learned that you should ask for things.
now, this one seems like pretty self evident, but for me it hasnt always been. most of my life i've believed that you should work for the things you want and earn them. however, im learning that you if you ask for things you want, you may be surprised with what you actually get. the biggest example of this for me is my job. i got a promotion this year ahead of schedule, and the main reason it happened is because i simply asked. (no one else has been stupid enough to ask recently.)
two other instances occurred this weekend and cemented the importance of this lesson. first, i asked someone to give me something they had won in golf tournament - something that i knew they already had. ultimately, i walked away from the tournament with a $180 golf GPS for $40. the second thing happened tonight at the bermuda rugby thing. standing outside waiting for a friend to bring me a ticket, i simply went up to the gate and asked for one. turns out they were happy to give me one and let me in.
as i sit here and type this out, im struck by how crucial this idea is to salvation. the paradigm of earning what you have has to go away to really connect with God. that shift from earning to asking is a big challenge for me and will be a long process.
