Habits

Everyone has little quirks about them, little things that they do by habit. Well at least I do. Last Sunday I got to thinking about habits that exist in my life and I was able to identify three things.

 1. I have a coke at lunch. Actually I have for the past few months, but I used to.
 2. I have a beer at night after work.
3. I like to fall asleep streaming something.

Now, none of these things are bad things. I mean, I do them and enjoy them on a regular basis. But why do I do these things?

I've come to realize that each item on the list brings a little sense of comfort with it. These habits are things familiar, things consistent in my life no matter who has surrounded me or my place of residence. Without realizing it, I have patterns of activity that occupy my time and shift my attention to my own joy.

In my mind, identifying these things requires that I experiment with them. Let's try cutting one of them out for a while, or maybe let's cut out both. What would my life look like then? Would I really feel like that sense of minor sense comfort was gone? Would I perhaps get even more meaningful comfort from a more adequate source? I've got a sneaking suspicion that I won't really miss these things. Actually, in cutting out coke from my diet, I think know the answers to these questions already.

So here's to finding the small things in your life that need to be refined.  God give us the determination to say no to ourselves for a better relationship with You.
